Since the Nouns NFT project released in August 2021, I have become super excited about creative common (CC0) projects in the web3 space. CC0 projects remove any copyright restrictions. Meaning, projects with creative common licenses are putting up their work as public media that can be used by anyone. Check out this post I wrote if you’re interested in why I think CC0 projects should be embraced.
In just a year, Nouns went from being a twitter thread idea by Punk 4156 to an absolute behemoth in the NFT space. The concept is pretty simple. There is a daily auction where anyone can bid to buy the Noun of the day. Each Noun gets you a vote in the DAO and all auction money goes to the community treasury (aside from payout to the founders). If you’re new to crypto, read this thread I wrote last fall covering the mechanics of NounsDAO.
One interesting implication of the open source nature of CC0 projects is that the best ones have a loyal fan of builders working in the ecosystem. This has been clearly proved by the Nouns community. Folks from all around the world are developing for Nouns and proliferating the brand. One of my friends, Salvino D’Armati built a luxury sunglasses line integrated with the Nouns brand (see pic above). They got an initial grant from NounsDAO and the whole thing was a huge success. I’ll be doing a deep dive into their journey in web3 world.
One of my personal goals for 2023 is to develop some kind of project with the Nouns community. This is me publicly committing to creating some kind of event, content, program, art, etc. with NounsDAO. I don’t have enough savings to bid on an average daily Noun, so might as well try to get in on the action by being a contributoooor. There are a few ideas brewing in my head, but have been particularly interested in pursuing one I’m calling “Nounships”. I’ll explain the experiment in a later post.
